- May 27, 2019

Most people struggle in deciding on the career path to take. The best way to decide on your career is to sit down and put down a career plan you would take.
Below are steps we have put together that you can use to decide on your career path.

Find what excites or energize you

There is nothing as good as waking up in the morning and looking forward to the thing you love doing. Most of the time, you can find such a thing from passion. What are you passionate about? Once you discover what you are passionate about, it can be essential when deciding your career path.

 Identify Your Goals

The second important thing you need to do is to identify your long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals are goals that can take more than 5 years to accomplish whereas short-term goals can be anything less than 2 years.

Identifying your long-term and short-term goals can help you decide on the path to take to your career choice. You can start by setting up SMART goals to identify long-term and short term goals. Your goal should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Write down a Career Action Plan

Once you have identified your goals, it's time to write down a career action plan. Make sure your action plan is specific and realistic. Include the shortcomings you are likely to face while on your way to achieving your goal.

Ensure your action plan is flexible enough to change as this should be expected.

Find a mentor

Mentors can help you in many ways in your career. With a good mentor, you will be able to gain confidence in your trade and develop your skills.

You can find a mentor within your industry or someone with expertise within your line of interest and learn from them.

Find a mentor you are compatible with and help you step out of the comfort zone.

Meet with a Career Advisor

If you are finding it hard to decide on your way forward, find a career advisor. A good career advisor will train, guide and promote your skills to help you gain employment, change career or even advance in your career.
